I would like to have a discussion at next week's captains meeting about the consequences for those DUC members that exhibit conduct during games that fall well outside the bounds of "spirit of the game". There is a mechanism within DUC that calls for investigation by a spirit committee if a report is filed... is this still being done? There seems to be a troubling increase in the number of incidents of late. In the last week I have heard about incidents in the parking lot, abusive language on the sidelines and flagrant retaliatory physical contact. I realize there will always be disputes during games, and would not want to stifle the great discussions that make it the forum. But, for those instances that are beyond the pale, it might be time to start enforcing the existing policies. Thoughts?

Thank you for bringing this up Mark.

Since we have a meeting just days away I couldn't agree more that it warrants discussion. I realize that with playoffs come longer days with more games, more adrenaline/intensity and sometimes more unspirited play than anybody likes to see. But beyond that I personally witnessed 2 incidents over the past 2 weeks that were intentionally dangerous/malicious.. both were personal and both risked injury. I assume nobody starts a game with an agenda to cause harm, but some individual's actions have come close to doing just that. Of course many of us have been injured by incidental contact.. I witnessed that recently as well and have had fractured ribs as a result of such a collision in the past.. but it's the unspirited contact that concerns me. I don't know that we'll be able to prevent future incidents, but I hope we can discuss consequences to discourage them and appropriate penalties should they happen.

No place for reckless (or intentional) physical contact that can lead to injury. Contact will happen, but being reckless towards the safety of others is unacceptable.

At the very least, captains should know how to file an incident report and when it is appropriate to do so. And if there is currently no spirit committee perhaps it is time to strike one.
