My understanding is that unless players are listed on the roster 24 hours in advance, a team defaults if bringing in subs. Can the League Admin comment on this for clarification as I know that week one this seemed to be a common issue among teams.
It was also my understanding, however, that the league was going to implement some form of "safe" sub list, such that this outcome could be avoided, and that players in the rec division could have an opportunity to play in comp if they wanted that exposure. Has there been any progress on this front? |

Mike, yes that is the rule. Players must be on the roster 24 hours before the game. There was some discussion about somehow creating a subs list but it never went much further than that.
If anyone has ideas on how they would like a subs list to work please let us know in this forum.
We could create a list of players (with memberships) who do not play in each time slot that might be able to play at a moments notice. Teams could then call up a player from this list. Would teams have to notify the other team that they have a player from the sub list? How many times can a player be called up? Can a player play for many teams over the summer? Who is going to check to see if that player puts teams over the 8 person max (from the 7 pm Competitive division) rule?
How do other leagues do it?

Interesting timing. Just got an email from TUC saying they have implemented a sub list.
Looks like I am the only one interested in this, so I see it dying a quick but still painful death. Having said that, I will still spend my time responding.
My thoughts on the implementation as I believe was previously discussed at end of season captain's meeting last year was as follows:
* Yes to membership required.
* Ability for rec division players to sub in rec or comp. Comp players cannot be subs (yes there is a variance in skill in any division...we are not looking for perfect but for reasonable solutions). If comp players want a second game…I see lots of teams looking on the forums. Pay the $45.
* Limit on how many games individuals can sub for in a season (you can't play the entire season for free - and yes it would be nice to charge the subs a moderate amount, but I think this would become a logistical nightmare for both captains redistributing the fees or the league in collecting)
* A sub list online the same as all team rosters where opposing captains can enter the names of the subs used as a way of tracking how many games an individual played. I would almost suggest a ranking is added so that comp teams feel comfortable as the season goes that they are bringing up players that are ready to play at that level. Again…another effort for Mark and the captains, but I think it is the trade-off (for captains) in having the ability to have a sub list in the first place.
* Guess option is also there to limit how many times a single player could sub on one team, although this seems kind of restricting if we are looking at this as a gateway for players to move up divisions.
* No requirement for team to notify other team as long as the sub is from the approved sub list (this enables tracking and also appropriate distribution of players).
* No tracking for purposes of 8 person max. This does provide the possibility of rule being infringed upon, but somewhat limited due to number of games a sub can play, and the fact that players should be playing up only. This is a temporary issue as I believe the league acknowledged that this was a one year rule, and would be removed next year. Let’s not get fixated on it for purposes herein. If a team really wants to win this way…I think they are missing the point anyway. |

I think a sub list could be a great idea. I would not worry about the 8 person minimum for the purposes of the sub list. As mentioned in the post above, a team is really missing the point if they try to win games by just loading up on subs. I'm sure most teams would only use the list when needed.
Having a membership should definitely be a requirement, but you may want to avoid charging additional fees.
I like the idea of putting a limit on how many times a player can play for one team. However, I don't see a need to limit the amount of times a sub is used. We may get a fairly small sub list for all we know.
I'm not sure what to do about the rec/competitive divide.
It may be useful to notify the other time about the substitutions. It may be best if we just leave that as a suggestion and something you do in good faith. There are many times captains are looking for a sub just hours before a game.

Hello! I was just wondering if someone could point me in the direction of rules for using subs for the play-offs. Is this allowed? I only have 2 confirmed girls for our play-offs so I just wanted to know what my options were.
Is there a minimum amount of games the sub needs to have played with your team? Or are only roster team players allowed to participate in the play-offs?
We have 8 girls on our roster but looks like almost all have plans for the Saturday play-offs are on for the 7pm Rec league.
