I am not sure of the answer... but i figure all you pro's out there could help me.

In the game last night, i was covering a person who was on the sideline. Their pivot foot was on the line and slightly stepped out of bounds, their other foot was completely out of bounds as the person tossed the disc up field. As i was guarding, i was trying to force the thrower to flick the disc rather than backhand up the line.

Question #1 Is the disc thrower allowed to step out of bounds to throw?
Question #2 Is the pivot foot even allowed to be on the line? (i am told that if the disc lands on the line, that it is out..would it be the same for the person?)

As a result, the team got the point the other person and I discussed it after the play to try figuring it out and we came to the conclusion both of us did not know.

Please help me out with this, as i dont want this to continue to happen against me.

Thanks!

Lets make this even harder... if you're on the right sideline, pivoting on your left foot and turn around 180 degrees to throw to the dump and in doing so rotate your pivot foot onto or across the line what happens?

My thoughts are that if the line is considered out then in both of these instances it's a turn over, considering your right foot is out of bounds entirely and, in my scenario, your pivot foot touched the line.

This comes up all the time as you can see i posted about this one before.. to save you time:

Question #1 Is the disc thrower allowed to step out of bounds to throw?

If the player catches the disc INBOUNDS, yes they can pivot out of bounds to throw the disc..

Question #2 Is the pivot foot even allowed to be on the line? (i am told that if the disc lands on the line, that it is out..would it be the same for the person?)

Line in Ultimate is considered OUT OF BOUNDS. If the disc hits the line its out, the the player catches the disc but the FIRST contact is the line, said player is also out of bounds. When CAN it be allowed on the line?! If the disc goes out of bounds and the handler throwing the disc taps the disc in with BOTH feet on the line then pivots on the line, that is allowed.

Thanks Iain, All this confusion... i should go practice on Thursday night! lol

the disc was thrown out of bounds by my team, so it was a turnover. When we continued the game, all this happened so quickly. The handler (wherever the pivot foot was) pivoted around, went out of bounds, tossing and then scoring a point off of it.

Part B: can the offensive player then pivot out of bounds to throw?

I remember having to make a full jump out of play to try to block the disc. I didnt want to be picky about where the pivot foot is placed, but it seemed to have moved because i was completely out of bounds trying to stop the throw. To me pivoting out of bounds is just like making a diving catch in the endzone but your feet didnt cross the line. (I was told before that you should have both feet inside)

Should it be allowed??? better yet, Is it allowed?

Well when the handler tapped the disc in he SHOULD have been inbounds. As for the pivot foot moving.. Call travel and explain what he is doing wrong.. It will slow down the play, you can move the handler inbounds then continue play.

You can get picky on rules, just remember it can come back to bite you in the a** later on in the game.
