Hey Folks,

I need a clarification of an out-of-bounds rule.

A play came up in our game last week where the disc was thrown down the sideline. The receiver ran down the sideline out of bounds, jumped in the air and caught the disc landing with both feet in bounds as he did it. What is the result of this play? Does it matter where you start your jump? Or only where you end it?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Mike

OKay.. So the guy ran OUT OF BOUNDS.. jumped FROM out of bounds, caught the disc and landed in? If thats the case he is out od bounds and the disc is turned over to your team where he touched it.
You have to leave from IN FIELD to get the disc and land in with a foot.

The "ULTIMATE PLAY" is a great example of this... A player would have to jump from IN BOUNDS grab the disc and throw in back in bounds BEFORE he touched the field out of bounds for it to count.

Anyways.. pretty sure i am right. Hope it helps

Ya, thanks, that was my thought as well, but not sure if it's mentioned directly in the rules...it was a unique situation. I guess it could come up at some point where someone runs out of bounds to avoid a goalpost then comes back in to catch a point...but I take it they'd have to establish themselves as InBOUNDS first??? Just thinking of the football rule, where a person who runs out of bounds can't be the first to come in contact with the ball.

Just looked it up .... sounds like the playeris out

UPA Official Rules
Section IX Part C.

Any object or player contacting an out-of-bounds area is out-of-bounds. An airborne player whose last ground contact was with an out-of-bounds area is out-of-bounds. All out-of-bounds objects and out-of-bounds offensive players are considered part of the out-of-bounds area.

I never bother to check the rules (reading is for nerds like Iain), so someone might want to check this, but I vaguely remember another similar rule that if a player runs out of bounds for whatever reason, they must re-enter the field from the same location they left (ie they can't run out of bounds, run down the entire length of the field, and then re-enter the field to try and catch a disc), which would be another reason why that play in Mike's game would be wrong.

Does that rule sound familiar to anyone else, or am I hallucinating again?
