We had a question come up about the rule about blocking with your legs or feet. What happened was the handler through the disk and a defensive player hit the disk with their foot. Offence called them on it and the play went back to the thrower. I took a quick look at my rulebook, but could not see anything about this. Is it in there, or is it one of the unofficial rules that we just follow out of courtesy.

Also, are we allowed to throw the disk from our knees, or do we have to be standing.

Thanks.

In this League there is no blocking with the legs and feet. In other Leagues they do allow it, but this rule will help people not getting kicked in the face. It is an illegal defence and disc goes back to the thrower.

You CAN throw the disc from your knees or your butt as long as you have stationary positioning on the ground.. IE.. you catch the disc on a dive, you get to your knees and STOP MOVING, then throw it is allowed.

I would have to agree with Iain on both accounts.

The no foot-blocking rule is just a DUC rule. Other leagues do allow foot blocks, however, they are much more competitive then we are. When we go to tournaments we usually ask the other teams to refrain from foot-blocking as it can be quite a dangerous play.

As for throwing from your knees, I have never seen a rule that says you can't. The rules do say you have to establish a pivot (not a pivot foot)which could mean any part of your body. The player must maintain this pivot until s/he throws, which means that if a player attempts to throw from his/her knees they are then committed to throwing from their knees and cannot stand up to throw. (see rule D 6 a) under the heading XIII The Thrower.

Throwing from the knees etc.

You can establish pivot with any part of the body you want to, however once it is established you cannot change it or it is travelling. ie. yu are on your knees and establish your knee as a pivot, the throw isn't there and you stand up... that's a travel.
