Hi Kevin,

Could you please clarify the rule concerning the space over a player's head with all captains via an email. I know the rule was discussed at the captain's meeting at the start of the year but I think there is still some confusion with some teams.

Scenario: Offensive team throws a long disc downfield. The disc is a 'floater' and players from each team are competing for the catch. The players have established themselves as set or planted; that is, it's not a foot race to the disc.

If my memory serves from the initial captain's meeting, there is no "right" to the space over a player's head. If a player can catch the disc by jumping/reaching/just plain height advantagewithout obstructing or charging the other player then it's a fair play.

I have seen some confusion with this rule. Some captains seem to believe that the tube of space over a player's head cannot be encroached.

Could you please send an email to the captain's to clarify this?! If I'm wrong on this then myself and my teammates owe many of our fellow players some apologies!!!

Thanks,
Allan

The rule in question here is the principle of Verticality which statesthat all players have the right to the space immediately above them. Thus, a player cannotpreventan opponent from making an attempt on a pass by reaching over an opponent.Should contact occur before the outcome of the play is determined, it is a foul on the player restricting the vertical space. My understanding/interpretation of this rule is that a player can reach into the space above another player so long as contact does not occur. If they contact the stationary player at all then they have prevented that player from making an attempt on the disc and so a foul has occured. This is always a tough rule to call in a game due to lack of knowledge of the "principle of verticality". It is, however, a fun thing to say ..... Principle of Verticality, Principle of Verticality ....
