League Meeting February 23, 2023
Please note that there were several side discussions going on and there is a possibility that some information was not put into the minutes. The basic focus for the meeting was to decide what divisions we would be running and to think of ways to grow the number of women in the league. League rules such as using subs, playoffs, etc will be discussed and voted on at the captain's meeting in April. Attendees:
Executive – Kevin, Jodi, Chris
Ethan, Kyle, LP, Boag, Paul , Stacey, Emily, Sandy, Jenny,
Nat, Brett, Grace, Emily
Discussion Points
1.
Shortage of Women:
·
currently 35% of members are women.
·
More effort from all members to recruit.
·
More effort needed to retain women.
·
Reasons women leave include (not being thrown
to, being yelled at for mistakes, parental responsibilities, having children,
other sports, having no mentors)
·
Current members may start sacrificing playing
with their friends so that they can be on teams with new women and make sure
they have a good experience.
·
League will be running a women’s only league starting in Early April if we are able to attain
field space. (day of the week and times are unknown atm)
·
League/Junior coaches will be holding clinics
for women (as well as other groups)
·
Suggestion to occasional create rules that
encourage more use of women (women catching a point is worth 2 goals). This can
be discussed at the captain’s meeting
2.
Better advertising needed to recruit players
·
Create more social media ads
·
Perhaps start putting more money towards
facebook and Instagram advertising
·
Look for a volunteer to help with improving
advertising
·
Volunteer needed to create flashy advertisements
(CANVA)
3.
Clinics
·
Clinics will be offered for juniors, women and
also for all players. Dates and costs are being finalized and more info to come. (update: One clinic happened last night and was a great success. there is another next week, info can be found on the side of the homepage under registrations.)
4.
Sunday Divisions for Summer
·
FYI, The new gender parity rules for competitive
ultimate have specific points that are a certain gender ratio. As an example if
the first line starts with 4 men and 3 women, the following two points would be
4 women and 3 men, followed by 2 points of 4 men and 3 women and this pattern
continues for the whole game. In the past DUC has used the old 11edition rule
where the receiving team choose the ratio. Generally, most teams just played 4
men and 3 women.
·
As we shift to align our selves with the current
gender parity rules, 7 pm will be the focus for any teams that want to play by
the new Gender parity rules. All teams playing at 7pm
will be required to build rosters and play according to gender parity rules.
Focusing on one division will allow for the division to have enough teams to
run a viable division. Concerns about adopting an all or nothing approach with
regards to the new gender rules were discussed at length and it was decided
that it is best to start with a gender parity division for 1 division at the
moment. Over the next few years we hope to move towards more gender parity as
we recruit more women into the game. DUCs mission is to provide quality
ultimate to as many people as possible and at the moment
·
Competitive teams have no problem getting enough
women but recreational teams still struggle.
·
The
majority of the league is made up of recreational players who just play once a
week and like to play with their friends.
5.
2SLGBTQ Inclusivity
·
All players are permitted to play as the gender
they identify as. It is not
responsibility of an individual to identify their gender to the other
team. The receiving team will use
symbols to address that their line is appropriately set to align with parity rules.
·
Absolutely NO members will make Homophobic/prejudicial
comments/slurs on the field, or on the sidelines.
6.
Playoff Format
·
This was discussed but the main vote will happen
at the captain’s meeting in April.
7.
mid-week 6 on 6 league
·
Many leagues across the country are offering
this smaller field option with less players to encourage more touches per
player and the smaller field is ideal for beginners and aging athletes. It is
also a cost effective format.
·
Easy to play gender parity.
·
This was brought up but no one was in favour of
it.
8.
Mid-week league
·
Discussion to bring back Wednesday night
ultimate. Two options were discussed:
i.
Hat league, people that are currently members
will only be allowed to join as a group up to 4 players, new players can
potentially have more. This allows for better
distribution of experienced players
ii.
Open and women’s leagues could be possibilities
in the future
